Hyderabad: History and Wildlife in the City of Pearls
19th - 30th January 2026
Join us as we explore Hyderabad, the city of Pearls, Moghuls and Nizams. The last princedom to join the independent India in 1948, this treasure trove of history will guide Kudus through its establishment in 1591 as an adjunct to a Mughal fortress, through its development as a quasi-independent fiefdom teetering between French and British influence and arms to its modern day fame as Cyberabad and the largest film production centre in India.
We explore two surrounding cities as we discover the Deccan Sultanates, Hindu temples and unique forest reserves. Combining travel to three states of this vast sub-continent, we taste the authentic flavours of India including the world famous Hyderabadi biryani.
After embarking on a tiger safari in the state of Maharashtra, we return to Hyderabad to stay in a former palace of the Nizam, recently restored as part of the Taj group, where our small group tour displays the exotic history of this famous dynasty.
Our private, resident guide will accompany us through the sights of the city including the residency of the British White Mughal, revealed by William Dalrymple in his eponymous book; the Charmindar, built to memorialise the city’s foundation; and Hyderabad’s many palaces, including the site of the world’s largest wardrobe. We will travel to Golconda, the fortress of the Mughals and the diamond trading centre of the known world and wonder at the tombs of the Nizams, their courtesans and rivals.
