I trust my wonderful sister will excuse my retelling of a story from 2014 when, intent on learning Spanish, she rented a room in a Barcelona household. Her Catalan hosts assisted as much as they could, but her knowledge of Spanish was not greatly improved. That encapsulates Barcelona: if you think you’ve been to Barcelona because you caroused on the beaches of the Costa Blanca or visited the Prado in Madrid, well think again. Barcelona is unashamedly Catalan; indeed, it has twice voted strongly in favour of secession. If prides itself on its spirit, its humour, its entertainment and of course, a reasonable football team.
